The business has only two major functions; Marketing and Innovation (Peter Drucker)
Yes, marketing is one of the discipline in business management that is least understood by many including business students, business executives and university lecturer themselves. Marketing just like brand is elusive by nature and that is what mostly brings about the misconception. For a long time manufacturing firms had no marketing department because it was seen as the least important activity in an organization not until they realized that no one can operate business in darkness without awareness creation.
In around 1950s firms started coming out from production concept by embracing marketing activities following the changes in business landscape. This lead to well structured marketing course offered at a number of universities across the world which in turn led to churning of well rounded marketing executive in the business entities. With this, firms started recording positive profits and up to now marketing has taken a centre stage in the operations of blue chips firms like Google, IBM, facebook, Coca-cola just to mention a few.
Means and ways of doing marketing has changed drastically with the invention of internet. Traditional marketing in most cases are coupled with online marketing to get the right mix that deliver quality customer experience.
In my blogs to come, I will be writing about both tradition and online marketing booth tools and channels
